How to Use Swimming Pool Winter Pill Safely?

Swimming pool winter pill helps preserve pool health during colder months. The cold winter months are no reason to let up on pool care. If you don’t keep the right chemical credit it will cost you more in effects and time in the spring. It could also lead to equipment damage to your finish. To keep your pool warm during this time you should lower the pump operation time from 9:00 a.m. to dusk. Also, you should test the pool water at home at least once a week.

When to Begin Winterization of Your Pool

Start the winterizing method after the season is over when the temperature dips to 65 degrees F or lower. If you start early you may have issues with algae which results in warmer temperatures. Give yourself a week to end this process. Several steps need to be completed in a few days.

How to Winterize a Pool

To close your pool for winter you need certain devices. These are used whether you’re winterizing an above-ground or an in-ground pool and include:

1. Pool chemicals, scare, algaecide and an alkalinity increaser such as ARM & HammerTM.

2. Pool cover: a safety cover or a security cover.

3. Winterizing increases drain plugs.

4. An air compressor shop vacuum or blower to muff out water lines.

5. A swimming pool winter pill if you have an above-ground pool.

6. Oil for valves and O-rings.

7. Pool cleaner kit.

8. stain and scale removers and preventatives.

9. A safe place indoors to store pool additions, skimmers and other fixed parts.

10. Optional: pool antifreeze for kits and lines.

Steps for Winterizing an In-Ground Pool

Follow the steps below to prepare your pool for the winter months.

Step 1: Remove pool accessories

Removing accessories such as skimmers, cleaners, ladders and solar veils from the pool. Hose off any dirt and algae. Let the things dry and store them in a safe place for the winter.

Step 2: Deep clean the pool

Your pool is as clean as possible after clearing all leaves, silt and other waste. This will make it easier to offset the water chemistry and stop mould and algae growth. Use skim traps to clean the pool’s surface and a pool vacuum to clear all waste from the base. Then skim the pool’s base and sides.

Keep your clean pool hidden between the next steps. So that it doesn’t get muddy while you’re in the middle of winterizing.

Step 3: Change the water chemistry

Check the water chemistry a week before the pool is closed. The alkalinity is between 80 and 150 ppm. The pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6. The hardness of the calcium ranges from 175 to 225 ppm.  It has a chlorine content of 1 to 3 parts per million.

Adjust as necessary and balance the alkalinity before you work on the pH level. Err on the higher side for each of these sizes as the levels will drop as time passes. water chemistry

Step 4: Lower the water level

If you live with a skimmer cover and live in an area where the water will freeze during the winter. You’ll need to lower the water level in your pool before locking it up.

The water level is about a foot below the skimmer if you have a mesh cover. Also, there is about half a foot below the skimmer for stable covers. Depending on how you’re drawing the water from your pool this method may take a day or two.

Step 5: Drain and store the equipment

It’s vital to drain all the equipment so the water won’t grow. Cause harm when temperatures fall below freezing. Clear the water from the pool lines using a blower then plug them up with growth plugs. If you want to be extra careful about averting blast pipes add pool antifreeze.

Drain every filter, pump and heater. Also, all filters should be cleared and washed. If workable store the filter and pump indoors for the winter.

Step 6: Add shock and algaecide

Before hiding up the pool add shock which kills bacteria. Then there is algaecide which kills algae. You may have to do this a few days before you close the pool depending on the kind of shock you buy. Distribute the pool chemicals around the pool instead of running them in one area. If you’re using chlorine shock don’t add it at the same time as the algaecide.

Step 7: Cover the pool

It’s time to cover the swimming pool! There are two kinds of covers: safety covers and winter covers. Safety covers must be laid down. They deliver the greatest security from waste as well as people or animals falling in.

How to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool

Most of the efforts for winterizing an above-ground pool are the same as those for an in-ground pool. You still need to clean the pool, balance, chemistry, add shock, algaecide and extra. Remove the hoses from the pool pump and filter and disconnect them instead of emptying and blowing out the lines. Hit the outlets.

When winterizing an above-ground pool add an air pad to the hub of the pool before adding the cover. The pool pad will help grip the growth of the pool water when it freezes. It will help with the pressure on the cover from the snow pile.

As with inground pools, you want the pool cover to do. If your above-ground pool cover has a winch and line tool. Be sure to pull it to defy winter winds and keep it safe. Follow the advice in your pool cover plant manual.

Follow these efforts to winterize your pool. Before you know it trees will be developing, birds will be piping and it’ll be time to open your pool in the spring.

  1. What should you do with salt cells during the winter?

When the temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit your cell will shut itself off. During the winter months the amount of chlorine salt to keep the pool clean is reduced. This is because it is hard for bacteria to grow in cold temperatures. If you wish to turn off the cell keep a pill or two of chlorine in an afloat chlorinator to keep the level even.

  2. Can you leave a ladder in the pool during the winter?

Leaving a ladder or taking action in the pool during the winter could create a safety risk around the pool. The ladder or steps could also become hurt, cracked or warped by ice and other parts.

  3. Do you want to extend your summer?

You can, with a pool heater! With both raw gas and electric heaters there is a key for everyone. You can also get into your pool in the spring. It means you can swim year-round in some climates. Your kids and family will love the countdown time to play and swim in the pool.

  4. Should I be upset about algae during the winter?

As the water gets colder algae growth slows down. We tell keeping the free chlorine level between 2 and 4 ppm as noted above. In some areas, there are temperatures above 60 degrees in January or even February. Giving algae an option to grow. Don’t bet on it. Claim your free chlorine levels and add a dose of All-in-One Algaecide weekly.
