Pool Skimmers: A Comprehensive Guide for Maintenance

Pool skimmers are like small tubs made into the side of the pool. They perform similar work to Skimmer. They keep leaves and flowing waste from joining the pump and filter.

These are usually square-form, placed near the swimming pool, toward the lids of the borders. The water level is usually about the lowest half of the skimmers.

The Purpose of Pool Skimmers

Pool skimmers skim many important parts of a pool. They are sure to keep the water flowing. Drawing water into your pump as it runs. This water then moves on to the pool filter, which burns fine mud, oils, and other waste before the clean water returns to the pool.

Pool skimmers collect large waste such as leaves, twigs, and acorns. This stops jams in the pool pump and plumbing lines. Pool skimmers gather the flowing waste at the shell before it can fall to the pool’s base. Thus, it lowers pool cleaning time.

How do pool skimmers work?

Pool skimmers are the starting point of pool flow. It works as a gateway to your pool’s filtration system. They’re the face of the suction line in your pool.

Your pool pumps stinky water into the skimmers. After that, the water goes through the skimmer box. A big waste would cause a blockage if it made it to the filter.

It allows the filter to do its job of removing the smaller impurities. So, the water that makes its way back into your pool through the back is purer.

Pool skimmer components:

Pool skimmers are available in different sizes. The parts of the pool skimmer component are as follows:

Lid:

The lid is a visual part of the skimmer. It works to keep larger waste, such as twigs, from being sunk into the pool’s circulation system. They also stop you from dancing into the skimmer basket.

Mouth:

The mouth is the door on the internal side of the pool. It is through the mouth that the water and waste get stunk into to be filtered.

Weir:

The weir is the wave flap found inside the skimmer’s mouth and will hang with the flow of the water. The major goal of the weir is to stop the waste from running back into the pool. When the pool pump is turned off, the weir moves into a fast position. It stops waste from entering the pool.

Skimmer box:

The skimmer box collects the waste before it is drawn into a pump. This is an important part of the skimmer without the box. Waste will stop and hurt your filtration system.

Suction line:

The suction line is linked to the skimmer box. This thing causes the power of the skimmer.

Equalizer line:

Pool skimmers collect large waste such as leaves, twigs, and acorns. This stops jams in the pool.

How to Clean Your Pool Skimmer

All you have to do is take the skimmer cover, reach in, drag the box out, and throw whatever is in the box. After that, replace the cover, put it back in the skimmer, and you’re done.

Kinds of Pool Skimmers

As you previously thought, there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to pool skimmers. There are a few different kinds of skimmers, depending on the type of pool you have.

Above-Ground Pool skimmers

Available in normal versions. Above-ground pool skimmers are run and cap to an opening at the top of the pool wall. A lax hose or pipe links the skimmer to the pool pump.

Inground Pool Wall Skimmers

Tied to the pool at the waterline, inground skimmers are also known. These skimmers connect to the subsurface plumbing lines that go to the pool pump.

Floating Pool Skimmers

These are made for movable pools without a built-in border skimmer. This type is an over-the-wall skimmer that links to the pump with a short hose.

How to maintain your skimmer

You can make sure your skimmer functions by cleaning it out. It will stop extreme damage to your pool’s filtration system. A blocked skimmer box causes your pump to work harder to cycle the water. It reduces the lifespan of the stamps and the pump itself.

1. Turn off the pool pump.

2. Remove the skimmer lid

3. Take out the skimmer basket and empty out the contents.

4. Return the basket to the skimmer.

5. Replace the skimmer lid and repeat with the other skimmers, if applicable.

6. Once completed, turn the pool pump back on.

You should clean the skimmer box at least once a week to keep your pool clean.

FAQs About Pool Skimmer

Here are some questions we get about pool skimmers and how to use them.

  1. Do you need a skimmer in a pool?

Smaller above ground pools sometimes won’t come with built-in skimmers. But most pools need skimmers to help snare big surface waste from joining your pump. So it doesn’t stop and run dry.

  2. Is a pool skimmer the same as a pool pump?

A pool skimmer skims surface waste using a built-in box. The waste is collected before joining the pool pump. Then it flows to the filter. Your pump has a box to catch waste.

  3. How do you clean a pool skimmer?

Drag the skimmer cover reach in and pull out the box. Turn it upside down and leave the waste as far away from your pool as possible. So it does not come back into the pool.

  4. Is adding pool shock to the skimmer a good idea?

Never fill the skimmer with pool shock. A blast could occur if shock reacts with chlorine tablets in a chlorinator. This carries a high risk. Never add shock through the skimmer instead always add it to the pool water.

  5. Are there skimmers on the floor of the pool?

If there are screens on the floor of the pool these are called main drains. Pumps pull water in from them but they are not skimmers. Skimmers are found at the top of the pool wall. Contain a box to help remove waste from the surface of the water.
